Abstract: "Solitary confinement is an incredibly popular prison punishment throughout the United States. Research implies that there are many issues that plague the punishment that may be reason to call for alternative methods, or even abolishment. Delving into researched articles on sentencing disparities, physical, mental, and psychological anguish, and the deterrent effect of solitary confinement, the reason for concern is clear. Contrasting theories of deterrence and general strain explain why individuals in solitary confinement often exude worsening behavior rather than improving. There is an obvious concern for the morality and ethics of solitary confinement and research suggests it may be time to start looking for alternative solutions."
