Abstract: Paul Tillich wrote much about art and religioussymbolism and experience. Despite the diversity of these writings, one can discern a positing of three basic artistic styles: idealism, naturalism, and expressionism—the latter divided into a negative variety, where subject matter and forms are broken apart and judged, and a positive variety, where the ordinary is bent but form and surface content are in some way affirmed.
