Abstract: The major purpose of this study was to validate the Belief Intolerance Scale, a self-report measure of people's general tendency to reject others who have beliefs different that their own. Participants completed a self-report inventory consisting of the Stratil Self-Acceptance Scale, the Substrata Incognizance Scale, and the Belief Intolerance Scale. Each item was ranked on a scale from 1 (not at all true) to 7 (completely true). Participants also competed an adaptation of the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) consisting of pictures to which the participants were asked to give an imaginative response through a short story. Correlations between responses on the self-report inventory and the adaptation of the TAT (ATAT) were analyzed by the researchers. The results suggested some support for the Belief Intolerance Scale. The repressor theory, which analyzes certain aspects of the belief intolerant person, was used as a conceptual framework for interpreting the study's findings.
