Abstract: This survey of college newspapers compared seven student publications from four states using predetermined guidelines. The guidelines included standards in areas of: writing, editorial influence, production, photography, and miscellaneous features. Out of the seven papers rated, three basic groupings appeared from the scoring: Superior, Good, and Fair. A superior newspaper was one that scored 95 or more points on a 100-point scale (10 extra credit points were available for special merits), a good newspaper was one that scored from 85 to 94 points, and a fair newspaper was one that scored from 70 to 84 points. Had any publication scored less than 70 points, it would have been rated as poor.
