Abstract: Over the centuries, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians have developed basket weaving as
a craft which will help preserve their culture for future generations to enjoy. The baskets which are made primarily from rivercane on site at the Cherokee reservation in western North Carolina are used to store materials or to help transport needed supplies from the marketplace to the home. For the most part, basket making is a skill passed down through the generations from mothers to daughters.
