Abstract: A critical look at the students and alumni from the University of North Carolina who served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. The manner in which they responded to the issues of slavery, secession and civil war were reflective of the value systems, social structures and political thought they were raised and educated to uphold. Nuance is required to understand why students and alumni chose to join the Confederacy. Many of these students rejected the continued use of slavery as the basis for the Southern economy.
