Abstract: The Montford Park Players (MPP) had their maiden season in 1973, and since then, this Asheville, North Carolina-based theatre company has staged free outdoor productions of the works of William Shakespeare. In this paper, the author traces how of the MPP has developed from a tiny group of dedicated volunteers performing in Montford Park to a fully-fledged nonprofit organization boasting the third-highest audience of any outdoor drama in North Carolina as well as its own permanent amphitheatre.
