Abstract: The purpose of this study is (1) is to explore the impact of reformist club women in fostering self-help, institution building and strong ties that bound the community together and (2) to examine the roles Black women activists as vehicles of change in their communities on the national, state and local levels. Organized reformers bonded together during the Jim Crow era to confront the multiplicity of problems that faced their race, gender, and children. (From the Abstract)
