Abstract: What do you see when you watch a dance? Do you try to figure out what the choreographer was trying to say? Does that influence the way you evaluate the piece? Or do you limit your observations to the dance itself? These questions are at the heart of how we understand what a work of art means. Our attitude toward the role of intention not only influences how we go about interpreting and evaluating the works of others, but how we go about teaching our students and the way we make dances ourselves.
