Abstract: The Pre-AP Program, introduced nationally in 2018, aims to provide students with the necessary support to excel in challenging classroom experiences. However, due to the culturally responsive school leadership (CRSL) knowledge gap among Pre-AP Implementation Directors there isn’t a focus to be inclusive of CRSL practices in implementation support and/or services for district and site leaders. As a result, the knowledge gap impedes the intentional inclusion of equity-centered practices within the Pre-AP framework. This research initiative builds upon the work of Gloria Ladson-Billings and Geneva Gay, expanding from culturally responsive teaching (CRT) to include CRSL. The disquisition seeks to explore how ongoing exposure to CRSL pedagogy for Pre-AP Implementation Directors can build the capacity of district and site leaders to approach the implementation of Pre-AP equitably impacting school culture and eventually increasing the representation of Black learners in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The intervention begins with a pre-assessment to determine the level of culturally responsive knowledge among implementation directors. Asynchronous/synchronous professional development sessions serve as the intervention, followed by an exit ticket and a two-week reflection journal to evaluate its effectiveness. A post-assessment is administered to assess the impact of the intervention. The theory of improvement posits that professional development for Pre-AP implementation directors will increase their CRSL knowledge, leading to equity-focused implementation support for district and site leaders in turn impacting access to advanced curricula for Black students nationally. This proposal signifies a shift in the development and design of Pre-AP leadership support services, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection and addressing inequities in support practices and equity initiatives. The research contributes to the ongoing mission of Pre-AP to prioritize equity and guides the work of Implementation Directors.
