Abstract: This lecture recital will provide performance analyses of two song cycles – one for voice,violin and piano, the other for voice and piano – based on poems by Emily Pauline JohnsonTekahionwake (1861-1913) that have been set by two composers, German-American IngridStölzel (b. 1971) and Canadian Katerina Gimon (b. 1993). Pauline Johnson was a Mohawk-Canadian poet, author and performer who challenged Indigenous and Victorian stereotypes.
