Abstract: An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction due to a sports-related injury can causepsychological factors such as muscle guarding. The inability to perform pre-ACL injury cancorrespond to an athlete experiencing learned helplessness (LH). LH can be described as a senseof self-doubt, lack of confidence, and fear of re-tearing this specific knee ligament. Themethodology used for this research was a survey questionnaire that consisted of 18 questionswhich were administered by SurveyMonkey. The results indicate that 23 participants, or formerand current collegiate student-athletes, had little to no prior knowledge of muscle guarding andits effect on sports performance. The significance of these findings corresponds to the lack ofmental health readiness in return-to-sport (RTS) protocols, especially for invasive injuries thatrequire surgery.
