Abstract: When the senses are overwhelmed by competing stimuli, such as at a sporting event, a sensory modulation room (SMR) can be a beneficial tool for regaining sensory calm for an individual and their family. This literature review analyzes the ways in which SMRs can be advantageous for an athletic facility hosting a sensory inclusive event. Whether through economic and therapeutic benefit, increased quality of work among facility employees, boosted athlete morale, or a change in the family’s experience, promoting sensory inclusion using a SMR provides an additional bridge between college athletics events and community engagement. The goal of this literature review is to summarize known benefits and promote methods of designing inclusive SMR spaces for athletic venues.
