Abstract: The book reviews several instances of female rule in England which came about when there was no available heir to the throne. Considerable attention is given to the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and Victoria; also discussed are Matilda, daughter of Henry I; Mary, daughter of Henry VIII; and Anne, daughter of James II.
