Abstract: "Abstract: Charlotte Brontë’s timeless classic, Jane Eyre, has provided scholars with the opportunity to use a variety of theoretical frameworks when analyzing the novel and its characters. The myriad of adaptations of Jane Eyre has further propelled the discourse surrounding the novel and has produced a pattern of scholarship that relies heavily on post-colonial theory. However, psychoanalytic theory has been underutilized when examining and understanding its characters, especially Edward Fairfax Rochester. Psychoanalytic theory aids in the understanding of the novels given how psychoanalysis attempts to go deeper into the psyche, desires, and motivationsthat cause people to act and react in various ways. Therefore, this thesis relies on psychoanalysis to explore and dissect the inner workings of Brontë’s infamous Byronic hero, Edward Rochester, in the prime text Jane Eyre, Jean Rhys’s adaptation Wide Sargasso Sea, and the most recent adaptation, Mr. Rochester, by Sarah Shoemaker. A psychoanalytic framework revealsRochester’s neuroses and conveys a holistic interpretation and understanding of his character.Simultaneously, it exposes the limits of a post-colonial framework."
