Abstract: Claude Simon has often been labeled as a disciple of Faulkner or in more severe terms as an unscrupulous appropriator of the art of the American novelist. This thesis aims at distinguishing the borders between mere pastiche and creative borrowing by setting into perspective two novels which best lend themselves to a thematic and stylistic comparative study: Faulkner's "Absolom, Absolom!" and Simon's "Le Vent: Tentative de restitution d'un retable baroque."
