Abstract: This document applies the concept of a fixed vs. growth mindset to music performance in order to promote awareness among classical musicians. As first outlined by Carol S. Dweck, a person with a fixed mindset holds the beliefs that their qualities and abilities are innate and unchangeable. In contrast, a person with a growth mindset believes that one can cultivate their abilities and qualities through effort, strategy, and help from others. This document consists of a review of psychological studies and reflects on how musicians with fixed vs. growth mindsets might respond to internal dialogue, external feedback, and personal setbacks.
