Abstract: Human capital—the knowledge, skills, and abilities embedded in employees—represents critical microfoundations for organizational success. This chapter identifies shifting assumptions and recent advances in the field’s understanding of how human capital contributes to competitive advantage. The chapter is organized around two major research streams: human capital specificity and assortative matching between workers and firms. The text briefly outlines the evolution of each stream, articulating key cumulative insights regarding human capital selection, compensation, and mobility, and highlighting areas of consensus and disagreement. The major emphasis is on unresolved issues and future opportunities for strategic human capital research.
