Abstract: Christopher Palestrant: "Stages." Performance by Les Amies harmoniques: Ellye Walsh, flute; Ericka Patillo, harp; Renée McBride, piano. United Church of Chapel Hill concert series. Notes by the composer: The life of a director is complicated: always theatrical, but rarely spent in front of the audience itself. My dear friend Rob lived this life – saturated by the arts and by music, always looking up at stages. He lived it intensely, with fully the last third of it spent under the shadow of its imminent loss. It ended too soon; this work is my way of letting him go. There are five stages also to be found in the Kübler-Ross model of grief, and this piece follows their journey in a one continuous movement: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and, ultimately, acceptance. This is a memory play as well. Rob was passionate about music, a contagion I caught as his college roommate. One may hear themes from a few of his favorite composers lurking in the score: Wagner, Bach, and particularly Mahler. Mahler’s eccentric, bilingual score-marks also guide the performers through this work, from the opening "Langsam–Allegro Barbaroso" to the final "esterbend."
