Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine if the applicants' use of Appalachian dialect or standard North Carolina English would affect employment decisions made about the applicant(s) and to measure the evaluative reactions of potential employers to standard North Carolina English and Appalachian dialect speakers by assessing their responses to speech characteristics of those speakers.
