Abstract: The beginning; to become an experienced designer in a specific craft one has to start somewhere. This is a journal of an Interior Architecture student at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s first steps in learning how to design with bamboo by making a hammock bench and desk shade. Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource and has the potential to change the building industry altogether. It is not a typical building material yet and its irregular nature poses some design questions. To begin to make changes in the way we build students need to be supported to think critically about new solutions and have the freedom to experiment with these questions. This is documentation of the beginning steps, an interesting place to be, knowing that knowledge and depth in this craft is possible but feeling so clumsy at the start. This project resembles that struggle through the bumps and scratches on the bench. The different methods of joinery are seen visibly and this project is a documentation of this process itself. The world is just beginning to know the wonders of bamboo and this small project is part of what will become a much larger story.
