Abstract: Defining determinism and free will was the first obligation of this thesis, along with tracing the development of these two philosophies in Western thought. The final step in this development was applying the general principles to the writings of John Steinbeck. In surveying the general literature, emphasis was given to ideas placing a particular book in one category or the other or a combination of the two.
