Abstract: Academic libraries use many different techniques for determining how to de-select reference materials. However, the area of reference materials is undergoing great change due to a rapid increase in the use of electronic and online resources, necessitating changes in the de-selection process. A survey was taken by reference librarians at academic libraries belonging to the University of North Carolina system who were asked for their opinions on the inventory management techniques used at their institutions, as well as their thoughts on the future of reference materials. The responses reveal a strong shift towards smaller print reference collections and a general shift towards the use of electronic resources over print materials. Print materials are still viewed as retaining value to end-users and are unlikely to disappear in the near future.
