Abstract: In attempting to picture the educational growth of Avery County one is immediately faced with the fact that during many of the years with which we are concerned there have been few, if any, records kept that would be of value. At other times, fire and flood have destroyed the records of the schools. Due to these facts many gaps will appear at which some readers will wonder. Regardless of the imperfection of the work, it has still served to deepen the writer's appreciation of the work of those who have gone before him in the field.
