Abstract: This study was designed to collect data on the frequency of occurrence of words within grammatical classes in the speech of aphasic subjects. It was hypothesized that there would be no significant difference in the proportion of each part-of-speech in speech samples elicited from aphasic subjects by verbal stimuli (questions) and speech samples elicited from aphasic subjects by visual stimuli (TAT pictures). The subjects were twelve white male aphasic patients. The speech samples were elicited by responses to four groups of questions and by responses to five pictures of the Thematic Apperception Test. Typewritten transcriptions of the speech samples were prepared, and the words obtained were classified into thirteen grammatical classes: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, auxiliary verb, conjunction, pronoun, quantifier, preposition, article, relative, indefinite, and interjection.
