Abstract: The aim of our research has been to compile an index of etymologized Latin American toponyms for researchers of Latin American history, civilization, and culture. In order to limit the number of place-names, we have restricted our findings to the Cronistas de Indias contained in the Biblioteca de Autores Espanoles. The writings of thirty cronistas thought to be the most valuable for a toponimic study such as this were chosen. Their works were then researched and from them, we extracted close to one thousand place-names. These were later arranged in an index form. In our introduction we have 1) described briefly the present state of Latin American etymological toponymy; 2) demonstrated the valuable information which can be gathered from toponyms; and 3) adopted a classification for toponyms. Our findings show a definite need for further research in the field of Latin American etymological toponymy. The material available is far greater than any study which has yet been completed. Only through continued years of research could we do justice to this most dissatisfying situation.
