Abstract: Jack A. Melanos' Sinbad the Sailor was chosen for this M. F. A. thesis production because it offered the opportunity for a fanciful, colorful, and exciting design contribution to a children's theatre production. The thesis is divided into the following three divisions: (1) Part I: The Play Background and Design Approach, (2) Part II: The Technical Production, and (3) Part III: An Analysis. Each part deals with the settings, the costumes, and the lighting. Part I is concerned with the factors that influenced the visual design including the limits imposed upon a touring production. Part II is composed of the drawings, photographs, and tables involved with the technical production. Part III deals with the critical evaluation of the settings, the costumes, and the lighting.
