Abstract: The furnishings of the home represent one of the largest total investments the average family makes in a lifetime. This fact alone makes home furnishings an important area for investigation. In addition, or perhaps fundamental to this, is the matter of the psychological impact which home surroundings have upon the development of the individual. Green1 gives as a conservative estimate of the annual expenditure on new housing in North Carolina, the figure $150,000,000. He predicts as of 1953, and again using conservative figures, that North Carolinians would build 25,000 new houses every year for ten years.
