Abstract: This study seeks to present the confusions arising in punctuation and capitalization, to find the causes for these confusions, and to present means of eliminating the difficulties. As a preparation for the actual investigation it will state the present status of punctuation and show the necessity for standards. It will also show how standards may be obtained. Having established these facts, it will set forth the marks most commonly employed today and the functions assigned to each.
