Abstract: Bertolt Brecht was born in Augsburg in 1898.1 He was exiled 2 with Hitler's rise to power in 1933.2 In 1949 Brecht returned to East Germany where he established the Berliner Essemble.3 The Stalin Peace Prize was awarded to him in 1955.4 Brecht has become one of the most controversial literary figures of our time because after 19275 he openly espoused Marxist-Leninism. It would be foolish to ignore the concrete realities of his experience with Communism.
