Abstract: Herman Melville is one of the most important of the nineteenth century American authors, end his masterpiece, Moby Dick, is generally considered one of the great works of literature. Melville is often, however, considered only partially as a writer of fiction in critical studies. In recent years many important critical studies of Melville have been published, but most of these works consider Melville partially rather than totally.
