Abstract: The stylistic history of the 'cello sonata is closely related both to the history of the 'cello and its technique and to the history of the sonata. Thus, the first part of this paper discusses the history of the 'cello. The second part of the paper discusses the history of the sonata, its forms, and their use in writing for the 'cello and a keyboard instrument during the Baroque bra, the Classic Era, the Baroque Era, and the Twentieth Century. The appendix contains a brief list of representative works from these periods which are available in modern publication.
