Abstract: Sidonie Gabrielle Colette (1873-1954) is recognized as one of the prominent literary figures of twentieth century France. She was for a number of years a columnist for the Matin, desk editor for Ferenczi's— one of the leading French publishing houses—and a writer of dramatic and musical criticism. She dramatized two of her own novels and was a brilliant lecturer. This career in itself would have been outstanding. Colette is known, however, not mainly as an editor, critic, dramatist or lecturer, but first of all and almost exclusively as a novelist. She wrote over fifty novels which, as a group, constitute a permanent contribution to French literature. Colette was a member of the Belgian Academy, the president of the Académie Concourt, and a commander of the "Legion d'honneur." From the honors just mentioned, it is apparent that were the Académie Franchise not limited to men, she would have been a member of this institution also.
