Abstract: The Antigone of Sophocles has attracted French dramatists for centuries. From the Renaissance to the present, the translations and adaptations of this play have reflected many of the technical and theoretical changes in French drama. Two outstanding twentieth century playwrights, Jean Cocteau and Jean Anouilh, have borrowed Sophocles' plot for their plays. The purpose of this study is (l) to analyze the heroic nature of Antigone in the plays of Sophocles, Cocteau, and Anouilh, with special emphasis upon the motives underlying her heroic deed; (g) to compare Sophocles' heroine with that of the two French dramatists; (3) to investigate the reasons for the selection of Sophocles' play by Cocteau and Anouilh; and (4) to present the changes which Cocteau and Anouilh have made in their adaptations of Sophocles' tragedy.
