Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine percussion instruments and their role in two works by Carlos Chavez. Each composition represents a specific time period in the history of Mexico. Xochivilli. An Imagined Aztec Music reflects the music of the Aztecs before the Spanish Conquest of 1519. Chaoulteoec. Three Famous Mexican Pieces is an arrangement of mestizo tunes popular at the time of the Mexican Revolution in 1910.
