Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to research the professional career of Herbert R. Hazelman and to present the results in a manner which portrays the various facets of this consummate musician, as a performer, composer and arranger, and most important, as a bandmaster. Data were collected through extensive interviews with Hazelman and seven of his contemporaries and by researching his personal papers, scrapbooks, scholarly works, magazines, journals, and newspaper articles. Additional data were secured from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Maryland, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A general overview of the status of bands (municipal, military and professional) in the early twentieth century was provided to create the parameters for Hazelman's emergence as a bandmaster. His childhood and collegiate experiences with respect to his musical development also were included.
