Abstract: This was a study of adolescent suicide. It examined the causes of suicide in youth and the reasons for its escalating rate. Studies of suicide prevention/intervention programs in high schools were made. A review of how state legislatures and state departments of public instruction are addressing the problem was included. The purpose of this study was to develop practical guidelines for public school administrators to use when developing a suicide prevention/intervention program. Questionnaires and letters of inquiry were sent to all fifty state departments of public instruction and selected local school systems, high schools, mental health centers, and state and national suicide prevention centers. Teleconferences were held to obtain additional information.
