Abstract: Indian Students, White Schools captures a "little known" story of school segregation in Lumberton, North Carolina. The photos include former students (three Lumbee and two white) who agreed to participate in a series of interviews and to share their memories of that time. Selected excerpts accompany the photos. In the fall of 1962, Lumberton officials of the "all white" school system agreed to enroll the first Indian students, including Rita Emanuel, Lloyd (Mickey) Locklear, and Sarah Bullard Howze. For this reason, their stories are culturally significant.
