Abstract: The purpose of this study was to describe the verbal responses that children make to a modern dance work on film before those children have received formal instruction in dance. A two-dimensional category system was designed for the purpose of classifying the subjects' verbal responses to the dance film. Valentine's (1962) classification scheme for children's verbal responses to paintings was the source for the four categories of dimension one. These categories were objective, expressive, associative, and subjective. Rudolf Laban's (1968) movement analysis framework was the source for the four categories of dimension two. These categories were body, effort, space, and relationship.
