Abstract: The present study was designed to investigate the validity and reliability of the Basic Assumption Inventory and to further the development of this paper and pencil instrument to provide some measure of the probable teaching behavior of elementary teachers. The instrument was constructed by this researcher utilizing past and current literature statements about child- and/or person-centered environments which, it was believed, were representative of assumptions held by teachers about children's learning and knowledge. The study group consisted of 100 elementary teachers who were working with pupils in kindergarten through grade six in the Piedmont Region of North Carolina. The test was administered to one-half of the sampled teachers prior to being observed, the other half, following observations. Both groups were rated independently by at least two trained raters on the Classroom Observation Scale as a measure of teaching behavior.
