Abstract: The movement to establish a national park in the majestic Southern Appalachian Mountains was a crusade that lasted over forty years. It eventually reached fruition in 1940 with the formal dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the states of North Carolina and Tennessee. The establishment of a national park in the mountains of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee was brought about by years of sacrifice and labor by numerous individuals and organizations on the regional and national scene. It is the purpose of this thesis to examine western North Carolina's role in the park movement that culminated with the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
