Abstract: Product Summary: Body Awareness Resource Network (Barn) is a multimedia device designed and produced to shepherd adolescents (grades 6 through 12) toward positive lifestyles. BARN was researched and tested by a variety of professionals from the Center of Health Systems Research and Analysis of the University of Wisconsin at Madison and was funded by the Kellogg Foundation. Although no citations are offered, the manual (page 2) states that research evidence demonstrates that students using BARN are: • more likely to avoid risk-taking behaviors; • more aware of the impact of bad choices; • better able to examine attitudes and behavior; • able to reduce stress and identify symptoms; • more likely to support one another in dealing with difficult issues Evaluation Summary: BARN is a slick multimedia device that will gain and retain the adolescent’s attention. The material is divided into two series (four CDs in each series). None of the material can be rated as poor, but the quality of the presentation is uneven. When I first used it, I was disappointed to learn the device was not intended to be used on a server for multiple users. After closely examining the material, BARN has an optimum learning effect when used in small groups or individually with a supportive instructor nearby.
