Abstract: The United States’ education system currently offers an unequal and inadequate education to many of its students. As a result of unequal funding, students from different social classes often receive differing educations in terms of quality. In an unequally funded system and one that places such an emphasis on standardized testing, teachers and students are the ones who suffer the consequences of less resources, more testing, and less instructional time. This thesis explores an original framework, based on Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Critical Social Theory, in order to counter our current educational system. As more education has been linked to a decrease in criminal activity and a decrease in poverty, it is necessary to find a way to provide United States’ students with quality educations.
