Abstract: Described herein are a few simple laboratory exercises illustrating the utility of both automated and non-automated phase sensitive detection schemes. The approach is intended to serve a dual purpose: to motivate the students to develop programs for instrument automation in theLabVIEW GUI environment and in addition, as is the primary focus of this talk, to motivate students to explore the fundamental operating principles behind a lock-in amplifier through the participation in well-designed laboratory activities.
