Abstract: Objectives of the study were to (a) identify and describe the demographic characteristics, motives, incentives, and disincentives of older adult volunteers in youth development and other organizations, (b) examine the relationship between motives and incentives, and (c) explore differences in disincentives according to the demographic characteristics of age, race, gender, and employment status of older adult volunteers. The study was ex post facto in design. Use of a stratified sampling procedure resulted in the selection of 200 older adult volunteers; 100 represented youth development organizations and 100 represented other organizations not involving youth development activities. The population under study was adults, age 50 and over, who were volunteers in 1989 and 1990. A mail survey was used to collect the data resulting in an 81% response rate.
