Abstract: The purpose of this study was to provide background information and performance guides for three compositions for flute and indefinite pitched percussion. Included works are Hemingway was a bombmaker. (2013) by Steven Landis, Whac-a-Mole (2008) by Mark Engebretson, and An Idyll for the Misbegotten (1986) by George Crumb. Background information for the study was collected primarily through the study of scores and from interviews with composers Steven Landis, Mark Engebretson, and George Crumb. Harmonic analysis was not a focus of the study; however, compositional elements including analysis of melodies, motives, phrase structure, rhythmic analysis and form were explored. Performance guides were designed to provide insight into a variety of approaches for preparing and performing the three works. Compositional and performance challenges of these specific works are discussed, including the special effects and extended techniques for the flutist, as well as how individual composers and performers have dealt with challenges.
