Abstract: The Tidewater Winds, a professional 52-piece concert band, perform Christopher Palestrant's "Port of Freedom." Notes by the composer: "Following a performance of my previous score for the Tidewater Winds, The Tidewater March, a retired sailor who had served during WWII told me he could practically hear the sounds of the port in the music. This piece began that evening. It set me to researching naval signals from the past 75 years, wading through the COLREGS for accuracy. The journey here begins on the morning watch at seven, preparing to get underway amidst the sounds onboard: the ship’s bell, the Boatswain’s call for ‘all hands on deck,’ the deep horn blasts as the vessel reverses into the harbor. You may even catch a strain or two of “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” as we ready to depart and the swell rises. There is a moment of hesitation with the sailor’s collective memory of seas becalmed, before the great ship is launched, dramatically abroad onto the rising morning tide."
