Andrew Magee is a music performance major (French Horn) at Elizabeth City State University.
Andrew McGee was born on September 13, 2000, in Suffolk, Virginia. He lived in Virginia most of his childhood up until 2016. His musical journey started at a young age when he began learning violin in elementary school. He played violin until his second year of middle school when he switched to cello. In 2016 he moved to North Carolina and began attending Hertford County High. Due to the lack of any string instruments, he started learning French Horn. There he played in the marching and concert band playing trumpet, mellophone, and French horn.
During his time at Hertford County High, he met a few musicians that inspired him to pursue a career in music. His first band director introduced him to the French horn and mentored him in his second year of high school. Apart from the standard difficulties of the French horn, for Andrew, this was a particularly alien instrument considering he had never played brass or knew how to form an embouchure. As he learned how to play the instrument, he truly discovered his love for the French horn and decided to work towards a career in the performing arts. Later he met alumni from Elizabeth City State University who soon became his new band directors who mentored him during his last year at Hertford.
Andrew is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music performance at Elizabeth City State University. There, he plays in a few ensembles such as concert band and jazz band and has performed in other ensembles such as marching band and orchestra. In February of 2020, he performed in the Sixtieth Annual Intercollegiate Music Association’s symphonic band, hosted by Winston-Salem State University’s department of music. Andrew’s goal is to one day perform in professional ensembles and competitions. After graduating from ECSU, he plans on furthering his education by pursuing a master’s in performance.
