Dru Henson Ph.D.

My research interests generally lie in the area of immune function as it is affected by physical activity and nutritional status. Much of my recent work has focused on the acute effects of various modes (running, cycling, rowing) of high-intensity, long endurance exercise on innate and adaptive immune function.

Bananas as an Energy Source during Exercise: A Metabolomics Approach 2016 1402 This study compared the acute effect of ingesting bananas (BAN) versus a 6% carbohydrate drink (CHO) on 75-km cycling performance and post-exercise inflammation, oxidative stress, and innate immune function using traditional and metabolomics-based pr...
Comparison of Watermelon and Carbohydrate Beverage on Exercise-Induced Alterations in Systemic Inflammation, Immune Dysfunction, and Plasma Antioxidant Capacity 2016 1501 Consuming carbohydrate- and antioxidant-rich fruits during exercise as a means of supporting and enhancing both performance and health is of interest to endurance athletes. Watermelon (WM) contains carbohydrate, lycopene, L-citrulline, and L-arginine...
Effects of a Flavonoid-Rich Juice on Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Immunity in Elite Swimmers: A Metabolomics-Based Approach 2013 2255 The effects of a flavonoid-rich fresh fruit and vegetable juice (JUICE) on chronic resting and postexercise inflammation, oxidative stress, immune function, and metabolic profiles (metabolomics analysis, gas-chro-matography mass-spectrometry platform...
Effects Of Quercetin And EGCG On Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Immunity 2009 2897 Purpose: To test the influence of 1000 mg of quercetin (Q) with or without 120 mg of epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), 400 mg of isoquercetin, and 400 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (Q–EGCG) on exercise performance, muscle mito...
Immune And Inflammation Responses To A 3-Day Period Of Intensified Running Versus Cycling 2016 2196 Functional overreaching has been linked to alterations in immunity and host pathogen defense, but little is known as to whether or not running and cycling evoke different responses. This study compared inflammation, muscle damage and soreness, and in...
Inflammation And Oxidative Stress Are Lower In Physically fit And Active Adults 2011 1617 The objective of this study was to determine if the inverse relationship between perceived physical fitness (pFIT) and exercise frequency (ExFreq) levels and chronic inflammation and oxidative stress exists after making statistical adjustments for co...
Influence Of Pistachios On Performance And Exercise-Induced Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, Immune Dysfunction, And Metabolite Shifts In Cyclists: A Randomized, Crossover Trial 2014 1262 Objectives: Pistachio nut ingestion (3 oz./d, two weeks) was tested for effects on exercise performance and 21-h post-exercise recovery from inflammation, oxidative stress, immune dysfunction, and metabolite shifts. Methods: Using a randomized, cross...
The Protective Effects of a Polyphenol-Enriched Protein Powder on Exercise-Induced Susceptibility to Virus Infection 2014 956 Prolonged and intensive exercise induces transient immunosuppression and is associated with an increased risk and severity of infections. The goal of this study was to characterize the antiviral and antibacterial properties of the bioactive metabolit...
Quercetin's Influence On Exercise Performance And Muscle Mitochondrial Biogenesis 2010 2950 Purpose: To determine the influence of 2 wk of quercetin (Q; 1000 mg·d-1) compared with placebo (P) supplementation on exercise performance and skeletal muscle mitochondrial biogenesis in untrained, young adult males (N = 26, age = 20.2 ± 0.4 yr, V·...
