My research at UNCW in the Trauma & Resilience Laboratory examines resilience following childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences. I explore neurocognitive mechanisms pertaining to the prevention and treatment of alcohol and substance use disorders, posttraumatic stress, and related difficulties in children and adolescents. I also use neuroimaging techniques, including EEG and MRI, as tools to evaluate and improve children's mental health, particularly following trauma and maltreatment in childhood. My extramurally-funded research includes identifying mechanisms of underage binge drinking in maltreated children, which is supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health (R15AA023251) and the National Consortium on Alcohol & Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (2U01AA021681).
